ABOUT US

Avon Working Dog Training Society

Avon was formed during the Summer of 1977 when a group of trials enthusiasts met and decided that they would form a training group to help each other compete more successfully in working trials. Avon registered with the Kennel Club in February 1978 and ran their first trial in October 1981 at Norton Malreward near Bristol.

Avon has always been a “self help” club but that doesn’t mean that we don’t welcome newcomers. A phone call in advance will ensure that a more experienced member will meet you at the training venue and help you to start training your dog.

For those who haven’t tried Working trials before, the exercises involved are as follows;

  • Control, heel work, retrieve, send away, recall and stays.

  • Agility, 3ft clear jump, 9ft long jump and 6ft scale jump.

  • Nosework, tracking and searching. The level of difficulty increasing as you and your dog progress from CD to TD.

In addition to training we periodically run fun competitions for non-competing dogs – both too young and too old or otherwise not suited to competition- as well as events such as our Easter egg or sausage trails which are great fun. We also run nosework competitions against other local clubs for those thinking of committing themselves to trials in the future or to those who for some reason will not be able to attempt the agility section at a trial.

Our current members train in a variety of disciplines, such as:

  • Rally

  • Hoopers

  • Agility

  • Obedience

  • Scentwork

  • UKTDA

  • Working Trials

  • UK Dog Sports
